The American Psychological Society’s 2024 Work in America Survey found that 86% of respondents reported feeling the work they do has a positive impact on society and 93% reported they are proud of the work they do. 37% percent of people living in Houston with disabilities are currently employed. Working while living with disability can improve a sense of self worth and add meaning to lives.
The Texas Workforce Commission has a program called Vocational Rehabilitation Services, which offers job placement, training, and support services which assists individuals with disabilities in finding employment. Employment First is a program which links people looking for work with employers seeking help. In Houston the Office for People with Disabilities lists several resources and organizations helping individuals with disabilities to find employment. The first on that list is The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD.
The Harris Center is an enthusiastic supporter of individuals working with disability. The Harris Center provides employment support services to its patients as part of its adult mental health outpatient programs. This support includes help with resume development, vocational training, job searches, interview preparation, and job placement. These services are designed to help individuals with behavioral health needs integrate into the community as contributing members.
