Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a major challenge for many individuals, both among veterans and civilians. A 2023 study of Houston residents found a prevalence of 12.6% for current PTSD following Hurricane Harvey and COVID-19. Per the National Center for PTSD, at some point in their life, 7 out of every 100 Veterans (or 7%) will have PTSD. In the general population, 6 out of every 100 adults (or 6%) will have PTSD in their lifetime.
Resources and organizations are out there in Harris County to help with PTSD. For Veterans, resources include the VA and Texas Veterans Commission. NAMI and Mental Health America of Greater Houston are resources available to the general community. Crisis services include the 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline and the Harris County Psychiatric Center. The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD is another option for individuals needing help with PTSD.
The Harris Center offers help with PTSD to both veterans and civilians. The Harris Center offers a wide array of services designed to help individuals cope with the challenges of traumatic stress, including psychiatry and psychotherapy. At the adult outpatient units, therapists receive special training in Cognitive Process Therapy for Trauma, which is a specialized therapy treatment designed originally by the VA. This therapy has been shown to significantly reduce the negative impact of trauma and produce long lasting positive improvements.
